What’s the difference between Stretch Wrap and Cling Wrap?

Stretch Wrap vs. Cling Wrap

Stretch Wrap and Cling Wrap are two similar seeming products that actually have far more differences than might initially seem. While the two terms are normally used interchangeably, there are actually some key differences that differentiate both products from each other. Therefore it’s important to know these differences so that the next time there’s a package or food that needs to be wrapped, you know exactly which type of wrap to use.

What is Stretch Wrap

Stretch wrap is a transparent, clear, and elastic film that is used to stretch around pallets, products, loads, or goods before transportation and shipping. Stretch wrap is ideal for wrapping palletized loads due to its excellent elastic recovery and stretchability. The following are just a few types of stretch wrap.

Machine Stretch Wrap

Machine stretch wrap is normally used in tandem with a machine. These machines come in either a turntable configuration for lighter packages, or a straddle configuration for more heavier packages. Using a machine to wrap packages is ideal compared to having it done manually since it offers convenience, cost savings, and efficiency.

Hand Stretch Wrap

In contrast to machine stretch wrap, hand stretch wrap is a stretch wrap that is meant to be applied by a human. These types of stretch wraps usually come with rolls that are designed to be easily applicable by users. While it may not be as convenient or efficient as by machine, it is a good option if you are not quite ready to put in the large fixed cost for the automatic stretch wrapper.

Pre-Stretched Wrap

Pre-stretched film has been previously stretched to the maximum breaking point. This type of pre-stretched wrap is useful as it doesn’t require as much effort to achieve the same wrapping force.

 What is Cling Wrap

In contrast to stretch wrap which is used for wrapping an entire group or boxes of goods, cling wrap is used in packaging the goods themselves. Cling wrap is commonly sold in boxes with a cutting edge, and the material is designed to cling to smooth surfaces. Cling wrap is often used for sealing food in containers. The following are a few types of cling wrap.

Cling Wrap with Cutter Box

Cling wrap is often found as a plastic wrap with a cutter box. This is a convenient and easy way for users to cut and wrap their own food or other such goods.

Pre-Perforated Cling Wrap

This type of cling wrap contrasts with the cling wrap found in a cutter box as the cling wrap comes in pre-cut sheets of a certain size.

Differences between Stretch Wrap and Cling Wrap?

The main differences between stretch wrap and cling wrap are in the type of goods they are designed to wrap and protect. Stretch wrap is designed for larger bundles of goods, such as stacked packages or boxes and is often applied with a machine. The stretch wrap has enough elasticity and toughness to contain an entire group of heavy loads. On the other hand, cling wrap is used in wrapping food in order to improve the food’s shelf life. Both materials are similar in appearance, however stretch wrap is normally used in wrapping the food containers while cling wrap can be used in wrapping the food itself.
