Review: La Dotta La Grassa, Sukhumvit Bangkok

A Fuller Sister of “La Dotta”

Meticulous in every little detail, doubtlessly La Dotta is a mouth-watering heaven for foodies in Bangkok, being famous as the best pasta place in town and the only house to use world-class La Monferrina pasta machine, and it makes a huge difference.

“La Grassa” is an Italian term for fruitfulness, and by adding the word to the pasta lovers’ favourite name “La Dotta”, more stomach-filling menus are on offer at this new venue.

The Dishes

Truffle Balls (THB 420), this round-shaped edibles capped with truffles is a good start as their mild flavour triggers your curiosity for what is coming next. And, the ricotta inside each of which turns into bliss in your mouth.

A strong-flavoured appetiser Fresh Crabmeat Bruschetta (THB 340), thanks to its homemade bread, combining with well-seasoned and frayed crabmeat, the overall experience it gives is great.

Sharing plate Canadian Lobster Mac & Cheese (THB 790) is no American-styled M&C, so don’t expect it to taste like one. This mix of conchiglie pasta, lobster bisque, and Scamorza cheese takes you on a journey of finding the juicy and bouncy lobster meat hidden inside this yummy pile.

Wagyu Bolognese Tagliatelle (THB 590) is a combination of grounded beef shoulder and traditional Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, topping charismatic pasta. For a beef connoisseur, you can happily sense the delectable scent of the high-quality wagyu beef as a protagonist and the cheese as a supporting act. We actually think it is already the bomb, until we try the following menus!

Seared Foei Gras & Wild Mushroom (THB 590) plays with a multitude of flavours and aroma so well. Even though the flavour is mild, but the homemade casarecce pasta and the sweet and chewy sultanas, when savouring with the perfectly seared foie gras, it leaves a lingering charm in your mouth and keeps you wanting to have more, and more.

Here comes the highlight of the night! ‘Bouillabaisse’ Seafood Stew Pasta (THB 990) is unexpectedly impressionable. Looking plain, the linguine here is like nowhere else we have tried – chewy, naturally alluringly scented, with a subtle salty taste. The fresh seafood plays an important role in enlivening the fare. Not a dish one can simply get enough of, indeed.

We learn from the masterful, happy-looking chef, Francesco Deiana, that the amazing spaghetti noodle is just an easy combination of flour and water, but the meticulous processing of stoned-grounded flour; the right proportion; and the world’s best pasta machine; they all turn the simple into the extraordinary.

Fried doughnut with luscious fillings in Italian way, Bomboloni (THB 240 for 2 pieces) is still irresistible even though you are already satiated with the foods, and our recommendation is: don’t miss it.

Another surprise found here is Pistachio-flavoured Sicilian Ice Cream (THB 140 for 1 scoop), which is made and served traditionally here. Topped with olive oil, it works gorgeously with the nutty scent and the creamy texture.

The Drinks

Perfect for after hours, Strawberry Spritz (THB 390) is a refreshing mixture of strawberry infused gin, sparkling wine, and tonic water. Its gentle strawberry sweetness is beautifully perked up by crisp sparkling wine.

Negroni (THB 360) here is made a bit lighter than usual, but it comes with more sophisticated scent. This glass of apperitivo cocktail turns out to be a joyous one to be sipped while having foods.

Beloved Elderflower French 7s (THB 390) is undoubtedly a must right here. The impeccable harmony between sweetness and sourness invigorates the night so well.
