Bangkok’s New Restaurant – Review: The Silk Road, The Athenee
The Silk Road is one of The Athenee’s four signature restaurants that completely remodeling. Serving classic Cantonese cuisine with a 21st-century edge. The dishes being rooted in age-old traditions yet inspired by modern interpretations and cooking techniques.
I did join the grand opening party of the restaurant a month ago. Again back at the end of October with my family and I was impressed to see all the tables were booked. The Silk Road has been popular amongst local residents especially and with some overseas visitors.
The design
Evokes an earlier era, drawing upon the Art Deco style that was popular in Shanghai during the 1920s, but brought up to date with modern artworks and comfort.
Plum-colored wooden doors and cabinets, glass screens inlaid with gold tracery, a marble mosaic floor, and stylish retro lighting combine to bring an air of elegance and intimacy to the restaurant.
Led by head chef, Cheng Kam Sing who originally from Guangdong. He sources only the finest ingredients and extracting the authentic, natural flavors, the artistic presentation of each dish by the kitchen adds a further sensory experience for the guests.
The Food
The concept of “Modern Authenticity” is to the forefront of the menu, in which the chefs respect the heritage of the recipes and traditions and present them for a modern audience.
Seasonal ingredients and the ingenuity of the kitchen ensure that each visit reveals a different experience. The selection of the choicest Chinese teas is also presented with a ritual based upon tradition.
The a la carte contains a listing of approximately 40 dishes. Set menus are available.
A special business set lunch menu combines dim sum, rice, soup and tea.
Har Gow – Steamed dumpling with minced prawn and pork topped with caviar.
The Silk Road barbequed boneless ducts, using finest duck. Another dish like Peking Duck marinated with Chinese wine, herbs, ginger, sugar and natural red-bean coloring before grilling to produce skin that is exceptionally crispy and thin but succulent, carved into 20 satisfying morsels of exactly the same size.

Most dishes are designed for sharing, in traditional Chinese style. A full selection of world wines is served.

For beef lovers, plenty of choices for you to choose from are available from Wagyu beef filet, beef spare ribs from Australia to beef from Korat Thailand.

Hokkien fried rice with prawns, roasted duck, chicken, dried scallops and vegetables topped with thick gravy sauce served in a bamboo cup, so tasty and impressive
When it comes to the final, we recommend you to try
Double-boiled superior bird’s nest and gingko nuts with syrup in young coconuts.
Overall, I love the restaurant very much. The team has done a great job from arrival till departure. The team members are friendly and knowledgeable about each of the menu items.

I have to admit that Chinese is not on our top list for dining, however, The Silk Road is one of the top Chinese fine dinings restaurants that convinced us to enjoy a more modern way of Chinese cuisine that tastes good and presents lots of healthy merits with overall lots of excitement at many of the traditional/classic dishes and others we tried there.
