Red Lotus Sea – Nong Han Kumphawapi: Date 11 – 13 Jan 2019


A large natural freshwater lake of pinkish red water lilies covering an area of 36 square kilometres with an abundance of aquatic animals, plants, and birds. It has an outstanding ecosystem that has attracted a lot of Thai as well as international researchers to visit for study. In December-February of every year, the pinkish red blossoms of water lilies will be in full bloom and blanket the vast surface of the Nong Han Lake as far as the eye can see, hence, the name “Red Lotus Sea”. During the said period, Udon Thani province holds the Red Lotus Sea Festival at Wat Ban Diam, Tambon Chiang Wae, Amphoe Kumphawapi.

The suitable time for cruising the Red Lotus Sea is during 6.00-11.00 a.m. when the water lilies are blooming. But cruising around the Nong Han Lake is available all day for sightseeing or to see its aquatic plants and birds. A boat service is provided at the Ban Diam Pier, Tambon Chiang Wae.

– 90-minute, 10-seater boat trip at 500 Baht/boat.

– 45-minute, 10-seater boat trip at 300 Baht/boat.

To get there: From Amphoe Mueang Udon Thani, follow Highway No. 2 (Udon Thani -Khon Kaen) for 25 kilometres and turn left onto Udon Thani Rural Road No. 1071 towards Ban Na Di for approximately 15 kilometres.
